Reversal of Fortune (1990) Film Review
What an incredibly insightful portrayal of the “top out of sight” community. Those privately secluded American families with no interest in media exposure. Who have comfortable luxury and seek no attention, only when their private affairs turn sordid.
In which case, it is typical media fare for journalists to extend what only, say, an Agatha Christie could fictionalize into the factual representation of reality – mysterious murders involving the acquisition of filial resources.
That grasping for what is not rightfully deserved is what is the consternation for maintaining a peaceful harmonious order in the world. For, if true justice is not understood by any, particularly those who are not in desperately craven positions for well-being, then peace on earth can never be completed.
And yet, the American legal system permits the disqualifying of tangible evidence in order to void the criminal punishments of those who actually committed wrongful and violent deeds.
Is this fair?
The film is poignant in being more of a legal discovery procedural than examining the moral weight of the decision making by the main antagonist, Mr. von Bulow — played brilliantly by Jeremy Irons. He depicts a quintessential snootiness which is inescapable to such a class that is comfortably above the help.
Of course, his playboyishness colors the film, but is an effect of experiencing the best of both worlds, being rarified amongst striving and upper-class women who have difficulties similarly relating to men who are born on the “outside”.
There is copious plotline devoted to the medical malpractice which induces the wife – and the main gatekeeper of the cash money – into a vegetative coma. Ms. Glenn Close depicts that matriarchal position of Sunny von Bulow with that graceful aura, and a keen attitude which is more reticent than domineering in her primal knowing of her authoritative position. It is in this discreteness that the film gently reveals the cosmic clashing of free will power; where those seeking fortunes lose sight of the reality of being in debt to managing such largesse.
That comfort is its own penitentiary.
Of course, the standard fool will gladly accept such a prison sentence! Because of his ipso facto ignorance in the true pursuit of happiness. Viz, pain will be, because it is human nature to impose stress in order to gain growth. A sloppy daybed reclining is a window-shopping fantasy of those who care for no honorable path in life.
Who want to marry into money and want the freedom that the money potentially affords.
Nevermind where that freedom leads to: such as shame.
The shameless, therefore, are not considerate of family problems. Because it is a function of their dysfunctional selfish pursuits which cause messes for lawyers to then patch up.
The misplaced, then, attitude on the pretenses of owning another life by virtue of one’s dominion over fortune, is an antichrist creed which loses sight of the tenderness of love. True love then, inspires motivations onto perfecting the soul, not onto worldly gratuity, far removed from the hazards of convenience. It adds oneness, therefore, not less.
