Gabriel Slavitt: Dancing in the Pocket

With a confident display of the tactile, whilst preserving a mystique to the titular combination, Mr. Gabriel Slavic at Babst Gallery represents ambitious spirit.

Lest I be remiss to ignore the inks, which have that quintessence of modern, viz, 20th century bravado with the rationalization. I’m drawn particularly to Sacred Directions – willfully byzantine with the commotion; necessarily meticulous with an exactness that is the truth-or-dare with penmanship. The weight beckons the true artistic spirit.

With that spirit emboldened with the larger compositions; confidently earthly-toned(!) with mud, which does not appear dirty but high-artisanate.

Blown Tire is inflationary with its radial projection. While I find a muted animation, not explosive, the intricacies are onto that applied intelligence which resolves itself to find harmony in order.

Gabriel Slavitt, Family Tree, 2024. House paint, drywall mud, india ink & chalk pastel on canvas stretched over wood panel. 69 x 71 x 1 1/4 inches.

Family Tree, meanwhile, is that delectable enigma which requires patience and understanding – what high culture aims to perfect; for what else is wisdom experienced but the absence of destruction? Sure, fine, I’ll inform the footstep with such ascension upward as a thirst for life; obscurely inert onto the compact termination of the otherwise open mystery.

Gabriel Slavitt, Pain Map, 2026. House paint, drywall mud & sand on canvas stretched over wood panel. 70 1/2 x 31 x 1 1/2 inches.

Gabriel Slavitt, The Word, 2024. House paint, chalk pastel, india ink & drywall mud on canvas. 108 x 86 3/4 x 1 5/8 inches.

Gabriel Slavitt, Fossil Record (The Angels Spoke in Correspondences), 2026. House paint, drywall mud, india ink, sand, chalk pastel, varnish, wire mesh & plaster on foam. 65 x 50 x 4 1/2 inches, sculpture ; 3 7/8 x 18 1/2 x 66 inches, pedestal.

Gabriel Slavitt, The Cat Loves the Fish but Hates the Water, 2024. House paint, india ink, drywall mud, colored pencil & chalk pastel on canvas stretched over wood panel. 36 1/2 x 71 1/2 inches.

It should be noted Mr. Slavitt is eclectic with his opening. He works bravely with varying magnitudes demonstrating a rare dexterity in an art show.
