‘Out of the Blue’ by Jonathan Smith @ Danziger Gallery

July 28, 2023

Mr. Jonathan Smith irradiates a sublimely novel idea of water with his confident expression and variegation of the concept throughout his photography compositions at Danziger Gallery with his new opening Out of the Blue. His ability to treat with such distinction the idea of water and its apparent blandness with an overwhelming presence imbues with awe and wonder and is triumphant with each art work.

His aim is that which provides a sense of balanced measure compared to the blind cemented impressions of the city. By removing the naked forestry of the architect, of the rational will power of man, while still imposing the sense of a cosmic fated power to give us the ability to notice such a disparate grandeur in works of man which require hours of manual operation, Mr. Smith provides that noble sense of humility, and moves the soul towards the appreciative. This is the quintessential aim of high art: to gain gratitude for living.

The wordless transcendence captures for us a healthy gradient of the subject matter. The invisible movement of the waters, for instance, with the glacial and snowy scapes portrays such a malleable and abundant – yet mundane – form; so vital to life, but so oblivious in its significance to contemporary petty social contests. Is this not what one ought to reflected upon out of the blue?

Technically, the constant success is in the appreciation of more than a gradient or shade, but a clarity on blue. The color’s ability to depress or to impress is weighted immeasurably toward the magnificence, and not as a means of bludgeoning, but as a means of balancing this very blindness we are to the water world which we inhabit. To move on, towards a grand vision of serenity, is an everlasting message.
