‘Living Color’ by Rachel Lachowicz @ Shoshana Wayne Gallery
Ms. Rachel Lachowitz brings to light new concepts of sculpture to push passed the boundaries of painting, in providing a sensationally placid fine art at Shoshana Wayne Gallery. With overwhelming fastidiousness, she informs her works with discretely divisible forms, dolled up with eyeshadow(!) with upmost refinement. It is here, where in the directive of her ideas she polishes the world with newfound beauty.
For within the regularity that is brought out, there is nonetheless the chaos preserved within each element. And this is what makes the artworks exquisite. That, Deep Weave (2024), provides such an idea of a cosmic sea with spontaneous bursts of starry concepts which speckle the blue, yet so orthodox in its containment, gives a more orderly attribution to what is otherwise preconceived as hazardous when we think of the uncontrollable.
Hers is a refined danger in the confidence to contain, and then reveal wondrously geometrical order. An exacting perfection which is undeniable to human reason, yet with that taste of unerring in every divisible part on show. This is where sculpture and painting have a happy division themselves, with a worthwhile equilibrium in the compositional scales, where we can appreciate the durability of such artwork given that need to intensely impress upon the subject’s mind new forms of beauty.
Pistel Stamen (2024) has a wonderful representation of pollination with the improvised lines which shape what can be interpreted as flowery filaments amidst that impeccable yellow order. And this is where the fine artistry moves towards a higher sensibility – in aiming at avoiding the anxiousness of intense desires for attention. The color, choice, in other words, encapsulates that understanding of gentle; for when one is beautiful, why does one need to try towards vanity in demanding to be perceived? Such an artwork can be a beautiful relaxant in the abstract reminder of an invisible world of such ordered complexity, the idea of natural harmony is extended.
In sum, the demanding attention which provides a comprehensive satisfaction of beauty – perceived close or from afar –, with the difficulty imposed in continuing with her originality with the gender signatures of her working media, is this evident in Ms. Lachowitz’s methodical works.
